Exploring the Stunning Lysefjord

We have just returned from our first Norwegian Fjords Cruise and one of our must-do trip recommendations is a Lysefjord Cruise if you are visiting the Norwegian Port of Stavanger.

About the Lysefjord

The Lysefjord is the southernmost of the biggest fjords in Norway. The 40-kilometre-long fjord is flanked by steep mountains, some more than 1,000 meters.

The Lysefjord is not only long and narrow, it is in places as deep as the mountains are high! Only 13 metres (43 feet) deep where it meets the sea near Stavanger, the Lysefjord drops to a depth of over 400 metres (1,300 feet) below the famous Pulpit Rock.

ON Board Experience

We booked this trip directly with Rodne Fjord Cruise and it is located just a short walk from where the ship docks. We set sail at 10:00am returning just before 1:30pm, leaving plenty of time to explore Stavanger.

The comfortable electric boat has sundecks, spacious cabins and kiosk. The kiosk offers fresh and tempting baked goods from a local bakery, snacks and cold/hot drinks.

Key Viewpoints

The electric boat sails from downtown Stavanger to Lysefjord and Preikestolen.

In Fantahålå (Vagabond’s Cave) you see where the “vagrants” hid from the sheriff in the old days.

Not long after, you arrive at Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock), where Tom Cruise climbed the sheer mountain face in the movie Mission Impossible 6.

Then you continue to the towering Hengjanefossen waterfall, where the crew brings the bow so close to the falls that you risk getting your face doused with delightful spray!

Along the way, the boat stops to feed the goats at summer pasture in Lysefjord. The crew tosses carrots and other treats to them.

This was a truly wonderful trip and an amazing opportunity to experience the Fjords close up.

How to Book?

You will be able to book a trip like this directly with your cruise line – check out their excursions.

However, we booked the trip independently which was super easy to do.

TIP – if you are feeling adventurous you can combine the scenic cruise with the hike to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock). The journey begins from Preikestolen Base camp and is a moderately challenging hike, without a guide. The ascent consists of varied and somewhat uneven terrain and takes approximately 4 hours in total, 2 hours each way, but may vary based on hiking experience. This can be booked through Rodne too.
